What is a GSA?

• A Gender and Sexual Orientation Alliance (GSA) is a safe space for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young people.
• It is for LGBT young people and allies who want to assist in making Cleveden Secondary School an inclusive learning environment for all.

Why is this important in Cleveden Secondary?

Why is creating a GSA important?

• LGBT Youth Scotland research found that:
• 69% of LGBT young people have experienced homophobic or biphobic bullying in school
• 77% of transgender respondents experienced homophobic, biphobic or transphobic bullying.
• If you want to join the GSA:

• You do not need to declare or define your sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
• You can bring forward any ideas about discussions, activities and events.
• Everyone is welcome.

What will we do in the gsa?

• We will create our own mission statement for what we want to achieve in Cleveden Secondary.
• We will discuss any issues pupils may be facing in school and think of ways to resolve them.
• We will promote inclusion in the school through creating posters, wall displays and events.
• We will also have some social times where we will relax, chat and play games.
• The GSA is on every Tuesday lunchtime in room 022.

Purple Friday 2022

As part of Purple Friday, the LGBT and Allies group decided to participate in a sponsored walk around the westend.  Starting from Cleveden they walked down to Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and back covering 6.8km whilst raising money for LGBT Youth Scotland.  Their target is £200 but it looks like they are going surpass that amount.  A huge well done to everyone involved! 

LGBT Youth Scotland - LGBT Charter

The LGBT Charter helps safeguard lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people’s human rights, particularly in receipt of services, as customers and at school. These rights draw on international human rights and relevant UK and Scottish legislation and have been developed in consultation with LGBT people about what’s most important to them. 

1. LGBT people have the right to be themselves and to live free from prejudice and discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
   
   
2. LGBT people have the right to be kept from harm and be protected from hate crime, bullying and other forms of violence.
   
   
3. LGBT people have the right to be heard, treated fairly and their views and experiences taken into account.
   
   
4. LGBT people have the right to be healthy, with equal access to healthcare, and the impact of prejudice and discrimination on health properly addressed.
   
   
5. LGBT people have the right to form relationships, free from abuse and with equality of recognition.
   
   
6. LGBT people have the right to privacy and information about sexual orientation and gender identity not disclosed to others, without consent to do so.
   
   
7. LGBT people have the right to education that recognises diversity and implements programmes that seek to eliminate prejudice on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
   
   
8. LGBT people have the right to be cared for free from prejudice and discrimination and in every setting.
